We are working on placing a code table on the website. In the interim, we will accept calls at (808) 587-0154 or (808) 587-0314 to answer any inquiries. If you are doing research for lease information, leases are identified by "L". Assignment of the lease would be referred to as "AL". If a lease has been amended, the document would be identified as AM. Should you have additional questions, please feel free to contact us.
R and REL are for releases and AS is for an Agreement of Sale.
To determine if a lien has been released or satisfied, go to www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/bc. Proceed to "General Indexes from 1976 and open. A search screen will appear with two little circles at the top. Click on "Grantee" and proceed to type in party's last name, space, first name. Look for documents referenced by R or REL that recorded after the lien. Click on the entry and it will indicate the document number of the instrument it is releasing. If you were to do a search under "Grantor", you would pick up any liens filed against the individual.
Class codes are currently being reviewed and consolidated. We will have class codes reflected on our website when this consolidation process is completed.
ACPT - Acceptance
AM - Assignment of Mortgage
CN - Change of name
D - Deed
FORC - Foreclosure
FSU - Financing Statement
GPA - General Power of Attorney
J - Judgment
M - Mortgage
MFS - Mortgage and Financing Statement
NL - Notice of Lien
NTC - Notice
ORD - Order
P - Partial Release (We've made some changes to prior document class codes)
P/R - Partial Release
There are two methods to do a search on our website, http://www.hawaii.gov/dlnr. Once there access "General Indexes from 1976". A search page will appear displaying two tiny circles at the top of the page signifying "Grantor" or "Grantee". When running the name of an individual under the Grantor search, any encumbrances against the individual will be displayed. Take down the information, then do a search under Grantee. All recorded releases (R) will be displayed. Click on the item and information will be provided to indicate what document is being released. If the release references the lien you picked up under the Grantor search, it means the obligation has been satisfied.
NTC is our code to indicate a notice being filed to give constructive notice to everyone.
In the situation you are inquiring about, the document was received in recordable form and we were obligated to accept and record the document. The document deals with geneology and rights of ownership to various parcels on Maui.
We do not determine whether the contents of the document is valid or the party recording the instrument owns the property. If there is a dispute over what is recorded, the issue needs to be addressed directly with the party recording the instrument or through the courts.
